About the Africa Green Building Summit

The Green Building Council of Mauritius with the support of the World Green Building Council is proud to host the Africa Green Building Summit and Exhibition this year in Mauritius.

The Africa Green Building Summit and Exhibition 2018 (4th annual edition) dedicated to green building will be held at the Intercontinental Hotel, Balaclava, Mauritius from 17th to 20th April, 2018.

The AGBS is purely dedicated to green building and will bring together local and international industry leaders, experts, professionals and suppliers of green products and services.  The AGBS will cover a variety of themes through the presentations, case studies and round table discussions.

Under this Summit, the Green Building Council of Mauritius (GBCM) will also host the World Green Building Council’s (WGBC) Africa Regional Network (ARN) meeting (2nd annual edition), gathering the Green Building Councils across Africa (South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana, Namibia, Rwanda, Zambia and Botswana) for meaningful discussions as well as adoption of green building strategies in the continent.

AGBS 2018 will feature two days of inspiring speakers; invaluable networking opportunities; showcase of green products and services; training on IFC EDGE and WELL rating tools and networking at the cocktail and gala dinner.

AGBS is the premier gathering for the sustainable building community in Africa, bringing together local and international industry leaders, experts, professionals and manufacturers/suppliers in the green building industry.

EDGE Technical Workshop – EDGE Expert Training (full day)

The EDGE Technical Workshop will help EDGE project teams understand the EDGE standard, utilize the software application, and navigate the certification process. It will also qualify and prepare EDGE Expert candidates to take the EDGE exam.

The workshop will be presented in English by GBCI’s Deepak Gulati, LEED AP B+C & WELL AP

Understanding the WELL Building Standard™  

Time: 4 hours (half day)

Audience: Design professionals, contractors, developers, owners, facilities managers, sustainability consultants and health professionals who are interested in incorporating health into the design of the built environment.

Course Description: “Understanding the WELL Building Standard” is a half-day workshop designed to introduce the intent, key elements and requirements of the WELL Building Standard, the world’s first building standard focused exclusively on the health and wellness of the people in the buildings.

Attendees will learn how to harness the built environment as a vehicle to support human health, well-being, and comfort. The ideology, structure, and certification process of the WELL program are covered in-depth, as well as the health basis for each Feature. Strategies for improving the nutrition, fitness, mood, sleep patterns, and performance of occupants through design and construction practices are explored in detail. WELL case studies are also highlighted.

The WELL Workshop – helps building professionals and owners understand their role as public health practitioners. It also helps medical professionals understand the critical role that the built environment plays in the health and well-being of occupants. 

For those seeking to become WELL Accredited Professionals (WELL APs), this workshop helps to prepare for the WELL AP exam.

The workshop will be presented in English by GBCI’s Deepak Gulati, LEED AP B+C & WELL AP

- Identify the purpose, key components, and structure of the WELL Building Standard

- Discuss the health basis for the Concepts and Features of the WELL Building Standard

About GBCM

The Green Building Council of Mauritius (GBCM) is a non-profit organisation, launched in November 2010 to promote and facilitate green building in Mauritius.

GBCM is a member of the World Green Building Council.  GBCM is a part of the rapidly growing African network of Green Building Councils.

The mission of GBCM is to facilitate and promote a sustainable approach to planning, design, construction and utilisation of the built environment; mitigating its overall impact on human health and the environment.

Our achievements have been in the front of education/awareness and legislative outreach.  We have trained 150+ building professionals in the Green Star rating tool; held yearly workshops during the World Green Building Week, at the last event we had the participation of a US expert in Biophilia and Biomimicry and a professor from the Universite de La Reunion on tropical designs for sustainability; in addition, we have participated and contributed to national projects, such as, Regenerating Port Louis, UNEP Sustainable Consumption and Production Action Plan, Building Control Act 2012, House Construction Guidebook.


About WGBC

The World Green Building Council (WGBC) is the organization driving forward the green building movement around the world.  There are 73 member Green Building Councils across the world pushing forward the green building movement in their country and their region.  The 73 member GBCs have 49,000 members (25,000 member companies and 24,000 individual members).  1.24 Billion Sq Meter of green building space around the world has been certified by member GBCs, 31 countries have made green building policy changes with contribution from the GBCs.


5 Regional Networks established in the world; Europe, Americas, MENA, Africa and Asia Pacific.  Through these networks, global projects, such as, Advancing Net Zero, Better Places for People, and the Building Efficiency Accelerator have been achieved.


The WGBC Africa Regional Network is a powerful, collaborative platform where Green Building Councils effectively exchange knowledge, generate new ideas and design solutions that speed up green building in their own markets and across the region.  A total of 8 GBCs lead the region towards launching a Net Zero Certification in SA, partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO) to further support green building training, and other development such as supporting government to incorporate green building standards into national regulatory frameworks.
